John Abegglen, assistant superintendent for personnel and administration for the West Clermont Local School District, has died at the age of 63.

The school district has released a statement saying that the administrator suffered from what appears to be a heart attack and died Monday, March 24.

West Clermont communications director Sharon Oakes said that Abegglen was at work when the incident occurred.

“Co-workers called 911 and attempted to revive him before the paramedics arrives,” Oakes said.

The March 24 board meeting was cancelled due to the tragedy; it was rescheduled for Tuesday afternoon to give the school district staff a chance to meet with grief counselors.

Abegglen, who was planning to retire later this year, devoted his professional life to the education of school children. He had worked for more than 35 years in public education, beginning his accomplished career as a teacher before becoming a principal and director of staff and student personnel, Oakes said.

Abegglen joined the West Clermont School District in 1982. He served as the principal of the Clough Pike Elementary School, director of personnel and interim superintendent for almost two years in the late 1980's, which lead to his current job as district assistant superintendent for personnel and administration.

West Clermont superintendent Gary Brooks said that Abegglen was a remarkable asset to the district and will be sorely missed.

Funeral arrangements are pending, Oakes said.
