Democrats may or may not be taking a greater hand in politics in Clermont County in 2008. The March 4 primary saw an unexpected rise in the number of voting Democrats, but despite the record turnout, there is little yet that can be determined concerning what it all means.

Mike Keeley, Director of the Clermont County Board of Elections, said that the voters turned out in record numbers last week.

“We had close to 45 percent turnout,” said Keeley. “We were expecting 25-30 percent. The exact crossover will never be determined.”

In the election, Democrat voters in a traditionally Republican heavy county snapped up ballots county wide; so much so that some precincts ran out completely. It is not known how much of the heavy turnout came from greater numbers of registered Democrats voting, an increase in independents voting Democrat or Republicans switching to Democrat.
