The Batavia Planning and Zoning Board and the Village Association of Batavia are in the process of finalizing design guidelines for a new historical district in the village.

But at a special public meeting held to discuss the historic guidelines Oct. 16, many residents expressed opposition and displeasure concerning the proposed guidelines.

Attracting more than 100 people, the public meeting was held as a dialogue to explain the proposal and to receive feedback from concerned residents.

Historic design guidelines were initially proposed for Batavia at a 2005 community meeting when requirements were reviewed for a community development block grant that would help pay for the streetscape project proposed for the Main Street District.
