Speeders beware, deputies patrolling the Batavia Township roads will soon be able to more closely monitor speeding in the township.

The trustees have approved the purchase of two mobile radar units that will serve the purpose of alerting drivers to their actual speed, as well as tipping off the authorities as to where to find habitual speeders.

“The township purchased two radar units as a result of some complaints from residents, as well as from witnessing people who were exceeding the speed limit,” said Batavia Township Administrator Rex Parsons. “These signs have a 12-inch display with a radar unit built in. When somebody drives by, it will flash their speed on the sign, and can even flash a strobe like a picture flash.”

The two units, at a total cost of $7,700 to the township, will be programmable to serve a range of functions. Perhaps the most valuable to the township, however, will be their ability to note the time and frequency of speeding in their location. Speed too often and too predictably, and you may be in for a surprise.
