The Milford varsity water polo teams have dove in for another season of aqua action.
Milford’s varsity boys water polo team, the defending state champions, and despite losing many very talented performers from last year’s senior class, began the 2007 campaign with a victory in the Huron Invitational Tournament that took place in Huron, Mich.
The Eagles nipped Grand Blanc (Mich.) 10-9 in the opening round of the tournament. Scoring for the winners were sophomore Daniel Matulis with three goals, junior Joseph Griffin andjunior Matthew D’errico with two apiece, and junior Stefano De Martini, junior Kyle Tepe, and sophomore Gilbert Marchant who each contributed a goal apiece.
In the remainder of the invite, the Ohioans were set back in three very closely contested confrontations.
Seaholm (Mich.) edged Milford 10-9 bespite the tremendous scoring performances of Matulis and D'errico who accounted for five goals and four goals, respectively.
East Kentwood (Mich.) outlasted the Red and White 10-8. Matulis again paced his teammates in scoring by recording three goals, Griffin and D'errico made two each, and Keefer added yet another.
Petrosky and Kent Hunt are the only twelfth graders on this young squad. The remainder of the team conists of seven eleventh graders, six tenth graders, and two ninth graders.
The remainder of the defending state champions includes, junior Hayden Owens, junior Adam Stricker, sophomore Jared Bussell, sophomore Joey Limke, sophomore Eric Sanders, freshman Connor Litmer, and freshman Clark McCloud.
The girls ventured to northwest Ohio to meet its initial competition for the 2007 season. The E-Gals competed in the Napoleon High School Invitational Tournament.
Like the boys, the girls began with a victory.
The E-Gals sunk Sylvania Northview's Wildcats 11-1. This high school is located in the Greater Toledo area. Accounting for the Red and White's impressive offensive outburst were senior Kristi Lanman with four goals, sophomore Gwen Storch and sophomore Sarah Frank with three each, and sophomore Julilyn Brown added another.
Upper Arlington's Golden Bears, from the Greater Columbus area, whitewashed Milford 15-0 in the next game.
The E-Gals turned in an improved performance in a 10-6 setback to Kilbourne (Mich.) 10-6. Lanman again paced the Clermont countians by throwing in three goals and Storch, Frank, and Brown each tossed in one goal.
Milford closed out the tournament with a 14-7 defeat opposite GlenOak's Golden Eagles, from the Greater Canton area. Lanman, Storch, and Brown equally shared the six total goals they made and sophomore Naomi Week hurled in the other goal.
Lanman is the only senior member of this very young team. The remainder of the team consists of no juniors, six sophomores, and five freshmen.
The remainder of the E-Gals' varsity team consists of sophomore Allison Burtoft, sophomore Cassandra Kupka, freshman Emma Frye, freshman Samantha Glasgow, freshman Jordan Julius, freshman Angela Phillips, and freshman Rachel Thompson.
