An unidentified man died last week when a workplace accident resulted in a fall into a gravel pit.

According to Lt. Scott Gaviglia of the Union Township Police Department, the man was employed by Evans Gravel, but the deceased worker’s exact relationship with the company is not yet clear.

“He was a worker, but we weren’t able to determine if he was a subcontractor or an actual employee,” said Lt. Gaviglia. “We have a name, but we want to make sure that everyone was notified before we release it. We’re treating this as an accidental workplace death.”

According to early reports, the man in question was working on some piece of equipment on ground level above a gravel pit at the state Route 50 business location. For whatever reason, the man then fell into the pit, where he was pronounced dead by authorities.

"On August 29, a call was received saying a man had fallen into a gravel pit and was unconscious," said Lt. Gaviglia. "Union Township fire and police officers responded to Evans Gravel, located on state Route 50, to investigate. At that time, the man who had fallen in was pronounced dead at the scene."
