The Goshen Local School District is already hard at work to assure that next year’s rating from the Ohio Department of Education is an excellent one.

“We have once again received an effective rating from the state,” said superintendent Charlene Thomas. “My first reaction was that I was a little bit disheartened. We were certainly looking forward to receiving an excellent rating in the district, but we will continue to strive for excellence in educating our students.”

The Ohio report cards use multiple measures in determining each school’s designation. There are a total of 30 indicators for the rating and at least 75 percent of all students tested (including sub-groups) must score proficient or higher on any given assessment test (the state introduced new tests last year).

The more than 2,500 students in the four Goshen school district buildings met 25 of these 30 indicators, falling short in fifth grade mathematics (70.8 percent) and social studies (71.9 percent), eighth grade science (73.4 percent) and social studies (55.7 percent), and tenth grade science (71.3 percent). The state requirement of all these academic areas is 75 percent.
