The Amelia Village Police Department is joining forces with thousands of other nationwide communities in fighting crime by participating in the “24th Annual National Night Out” Aug. 7.

The police department will be hosting a variety of special events that evening, starting with a parade from Groh Park to Spencer Shank Park, which is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m. The community party at Shank Park that will follow the parade will include a cookout (free food and drinks), a DJ playing live music, games and contests, door prizes, youth activities, anti-crime rallies, and a spectacular fireworks display.

The event, which is sponsored by the non-profit National Association of Town Watch, and co-sponsored locally by the Amelia Police Department, is a crime and drug prevention event held annually on the first Tuesday in August.

Amelia Police Chief Jeffrey Sucher said that the event, which Amelia has participated in for the past 10 years, is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, engender support for local anti-crime efforts such as neighborhood block watches, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and finally, to send a clear and distinct message to criminals that the Amelia community is mobilized, organized, and fighting back.
