After what they describe as a successful year of implementation, the Milford schools administration will be making changes to their random drug testing program, hoping to test more students in a more effective fashion during the upcoming school year.

The policy on drug testing has remained unchanged, said Valerie Miller, Communications Coordinator for Milford Schools, but the manner in which the testing will take place will see some changes.

“There’s been no change to the drug testing policy, but there is a change in the administration of the program,” said Miller. “After completing one year of testing, there are things that the high school administrators determined that they wanted to add. More days of testing, as well as testing more students on a given day are included.”

Milford undertook a random drug testing policy after a much-publicized undercover operation unearthed a form of drug ring within the school. The policy, which began last year, instituted random drug tests for students who apply for parking permits or with students involved in extra curricular activities such as sports. Some students also participated as part of a disciplinary action. Of more than 100 students who were tested, only three tested positive for drugs.
