More than 200 people turned out to celebrate Independence Day at the third annual Pierce Township children’s parade and festival.

Held at the Pierce Township Park, this year’s event was once again dedicated to the memory of Staff Sergeant Charles “Chuck” Kiser, a Pierce resident who was killed in Iraq on June 24, 2004.

At last year’s festival, the Legendary Run Community Association announced the creation of a student scholarship freedom fund in Kiser’s name.

“Before his tragic death, Pierce Township son and hero Chuck Kiser was interested in criminal justice and law enforcement and was even helping Iraqi recruits become police officers,” said Legendary Run Community Association President Bob Pautke. “It is only fitting that the freedom fund in his name benefit those students who are interested in entering a career in the criminal justice field.”
