One local Boy Scout learned that the motto “be prepared” is more than something you memorize for scout meetings. While finishing his Eagle Scout project, Brian Kittrell found out that things don’t always go as planned.

Recently, Kittrell and Batavia Township partnered to place 20 bluebird boxes in the new Batavia Township Park. The project, which effectively completed the requirements for Kittrell’s Eagle Scout project, came just days before Kittrell turned 18, the deadline to complete the necessary requirements to attain Eagle Scout status.

“This actually wasn’t my first choice,” said Kittrell. “I was building a storage shed for the church my scout group meets at. They wanted a big storage shed to keep equipment in, and I worked on it for three months. Then they decided they didn’t have enough funding for it anymore. That was just two weeks before my 18th birthday, which is the deadline for your eagle project. I was down to the wire and didn’t have anywhere to go, and ended up getting in touch with the people at the township, and they said that they had been looking for someone for a while and needed this project done.”

Kittrell, who joined the boy scouts at age 12, is now expected to reach the highest rank a scout can achieve, Eagle Scout. Going out with a bird house, said Kittrell, may not have been his plan, but is fitting, considering his history with the scouts.
