New Richmond is gearing up for its 15th annual Cardboard Boat Regatta.

The riverfront beach event, which takes place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18 and coincides with New Richmond’s annual River Days festival, is looking for all boat builders and racers to start registering for the event now.

“This is our annual call to those competitors who want to participate,” said race coordinator Ray Perszyk. “The regatta has become world-famous and this year will be the best year ever. We are continually amazed at the unique and interesting boat designs that racers come up with.”

The challenge for all Cardboard Boat Regatta participants is to design and build an original boat using only corrugated cardboard and duct tape. The boats should be designed and built prior to the day of the race and must be capable of racing the 200 yard course stretch along the Ohio River shoreline.
