Matt Maupin has not yet been welcomed home from the battlefields of Iraq, but awaiting his return is the welcome pavilion built in his honor on the beach at East Fork Lake.

The pavilion was started last May when Clermont County High School rowing crew students broke ground on the site. In an effort known as “Rock-On Matt,” local high school students collected rocks last year to build the pavilion’s stone fireplace, cooking area, stone supports, and staging area.

Before joining the military, Matt Maupin was a rower for the Clermont County High Schools Crew, even capturing a gold medal with his rowing crew at the May 2001 Midwest Championships on Harsha Lake.

The large, open, almost-completed pavilion is constructed directly on the rowing crew’s training grounds, the beach lawn site will be used as a meeting place for the rowing regattas as well as many other social events and activities.
