Amelia is right smack dab in the middle of the Fort Ancient Valley Conference Buckeye Division (FAVC-B) girls varsity soccer race. The Barons are 2-1 in the FAVC-B and 6-3-2 overall.

“I’m pleasantly surprised with how well we’re doing considering we lost five very talented seniors last year. The girls have stepped up and we still have a chance to win the conference,” said head coach Amy Kemmer, last year’s FAVC-B coach of the year.

Sophomore striker Megan Spencer is the scoring leader with five goals to her credit. Sophomore stopper Brittany Klass is the assist leader with her assistance coming mostly “off corner kicks.” Sophomore center midfielder Sarah Vinson and senior midfielder/striker Katherine “Kat” Westendorf have been displaying superior offense.

The defensive standouts have been senior sweeper Allie Zeller, junior fullback Ashley Cruthcher, and freshman goalkeeper Chelsea Lang.

“In the future we will expect to continue our success and we want to bring respect back to Amelia soccer again and become a top-notch program again,” Kemmer concluded.

“Anything that could go wrong has gone wrong,” said New Richmond head girls soccer coach Denny Hopewell. “This is one of those years. We lost four starters to injuries and illness after the second game.”

The Lion taskmaster is receiving some fine performances from his remaining charges. Senior striker Meghan Mancini has tallied 11 goals. The assist leader is senior striker Erin Lusk.

“The defense has played well.”

Senior fullback Kayla Lavely and sophomore sweeper Chelsea Coffey have been the stalwarts on defense.

Hopewell is positive things will get better. “We are going to be okay in the future.”
