Local hospital Mercy Clermont has again taken its place in the national spotlight with a high ranking amongst hospitals nation-wide for quality of service. Total Benchmark Solution, a healthcare ranking service, placed the local institution in the top 10 overall in a national ranking of hospitals. Mark Shugarman, President and CEO of Mercy Clermont, said that the recognition was a testament to the hospital staff.

“I think this recognition from TBS is a great tribute to our employees and the quality of care they are providing,” said Shugarman. “We’re blessed to have a team of people who work very well together and place the patient at the center of everything that they do.”

Mercy Clermont joins 100 hospitals recognized for their top scores, six of which are in Ohio. Clermont was the only hospital in the area to receive a ranking in the top 10 positions.

“TBS is an independent company that analyzes hospitals across the United States and develops comparative reports,” said Shugarman. “They compare every hospital that receives funding from Medicare, which is virtually every hospital of any size.”

TBS, which was formed in 2003 to compare and rank hospitals, provides a benchmark by comparing how hospitals handle certain aspects of care. In turn, they use this data to provide a broader picture of how the hospital operates and formulate a ranking.

“They measure specific areas, such as heart attack, congestive heart failure and pneumonia, because those are very common reasons that patients are admitted to hospitals,” said Shugarman. “That’s why those are emphasized. This is an annual report.”

Over the past year, Mercy Clermont has earned several top awards from the health care industry, including ratings in the top 10 percent nationally for physician satisfaction and a zero requirement for improvement rating from the joint commission on accreditation of healthcare organizations.

“We’ve historically done extremely well,” said Shugarman. “There is another company called Solucient which also analyzes hospitals and they placed Mercy Clermont among the top 100 for performance improvement.”
