With the unofficial election results turning in at the final hour of Aug. 2, Republican candidate Jean Schmidt was projected to be the winner by a sound but narrow margin over Democratic challenger Paul Hackett. Earning the win with a little under 4,000 votes, Schmidt finished the election night with 59,132 votes to Hackett
