Clermont County will be bidding farewell to longtime health commissioner Dr. Janet Rickabaugh next month when the 12-year veteran of the health district retires for some much-needed rest and relaxation.

Contestants in the first annual Clermont County Biggest Tomato contest vied Aug. 19 to see who could grow the greatest of the great and the biggest of the big, while everyone else just came to enjoy the free salsa and see some really big tomatoes.

After having once been known as the largest fruit-producing area of the nation, prior to Florida becoming a state, fruit production in the county dwindled over the years, but a few dedicated farmers have cultivated the tradition.
